14: The Evolution of Thought

In the current issue of Elle Decor India,  prof. Doshi is guest-editor-in-chief, because of his 90th birthday. He is a famous Indian architect, who worked with Le Corbusier, Kahn and many others.

Some of his thoughts on objects:
"Even though each object should have its own identity, it cannot be conceived in isolation since identity is a mere comparison. All the choices of technologies or materials are born out of their own nature and needs. Their own evolution gives it a character and demonstrates to us its purpose or use. Hence what we need to do is allow the goal of existence to find its meaning and application. Time and eternity are measurable paradoxes, others are immeasurable to mark our existence and emotions. It is essential to be flexible, find some porosity that allows a chance to intervene. What we perceive is viewed by the prism of our memories and the present. It is necessary to observe from a distance with a sense of timelessness and not as fragmented issues, be it art, architecture, or life itself."

This rather conceptual way of thinking is only possible with objects that matter. Throw-away-items don't even allow us to get close to observing them. Although Doshi is an architect, his thoughts are closely related to sustainable objects and our relation with what surrounds us.
Some other quotes:
"Constantly look at life itself".
"Create a bond, a sense of belonging".
