22: Wool Filler
Another example of how to deal with our objects in a responsible way is mending. My vintage duffle coat shows traces of wear; it gets thin on certain parts after many years of wearing it. But it's such a wonderful coat, I didn't want to get rid of it. So I'm restoring it. With woolfiller , a design concept by my friend Heleen Klopper. She invented the system of felting holes, moth meals and parts of wear, simply with a special needle, carded wool and a cushion underneath.
It extends longevity of textiles; an easy repair saves a lot of throw-aways and as such is a very sustainable invention. According to Time magazine woolfiller was among the 50 best inventions of 2010. It's still going strong; kits are sold worldwide.
I did jumpers with it, but this coat was much bigger. To divide the carded wool evenly, not too thick and blending in with the fabric is a skill, bu the result is so good. I can wear my blue duffle coat for at least another winter......and probably more.
